Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin longō intervallō.
Etymology: < classical Latin longō intervallō, lit. ‘at a great distance’ < longō , ablative of longus long adj.1 + intervallō , ablative of intervallum interval n.With the use in quot. 1693, compare post-classical Latin longo proximi intervallo, in same sense (1656 or earlier), and also classical Latin longō intervallō tamen proxumus next to them, after a long gap ( Cicero Brutus 173: Duobus igitur summis Crasso et Antonio L. Philippus proxumus accedebat, sed longo intervallo tamen proxumus. ‘Next to the two in top place, Crassus and Antonius, is Philip, but next to them after a long gap.’).
