Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin mātūtīnus , -ary suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin mātūtīnus matutine adj. + -ary suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin matutinarius, adjective (in phrase vigilia matutinaria: c1330 in a British source), and noun (from 6th cent. in sense ‘psalm sung at morning service’).
Chiefly U.S. rare.
