Etymology: Probably a variant of mama n.1 (see discussion at that entry). Compare maum n.For occasional forms maumey , maumie see mammy n. Although Dict. Amer. Regional Eng. s.v. mamma n.1 records a few scattered examples of the pronunciation /ˈmɔmə/ in the sense ‘mother’, there is no evidence of the form mauma used in this sense.
