Etymology: Probably < ancient Greek μελιτ-, μέλι honey (see mell n.²) + -ism suffix, after classical Latin melitītēs wine prepared with honey, or its etymon Hellenistic Greek μελιτίτης, although if so the suffix substitution is hard to explain; Hellenistic Greek μελιτισμός is only attested once in a minor medical work (the Apud Oribasium of Mnesitheus) in the sense ‘anointing with honey’.Melitites occurs as an unassimilated loan glossed ‘a drink made of hony and must, or newe wyne’ in T. Elyot Dict. (1538).

Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
