Etymology: < meta- prefix + phone n.1 (see quot. 1930). Compare monophone n. 3.
Phonetics.
Either of two or more phonemes which are in free variation in particular words or in particular circumstances. Also: (in H. E. Palmer's terminology) a phoneme comprising more than one sound (cf. monophone n. 3) (disused). Cf. variphone n.
