Etymology: Cognate with Old Dutch mereswīn (Middle Dutch maerswijn , meerswijn , merswijn , Dutch meerzwijn ), Middle Low German merswīn , Old High German meriswīn (Middle High German mereswīn , merswīn , German Meerschwein ), Icelandic marsvín , Old Swedish marsvin (Swedish marsvin ), Danish marsvin < the Germanic base of mere n.1 + the Germanic base of swine n.; compare porpoise n. and discussion at that entry, and also Welsh morwch porpoise, dolphin, seal (c1400; < môr sea (see mere n.1) + hwch : see swine n.), Old Cornish morhoch , glossing Latin delphinus , and related forms in other Celtic languages. Compare Middle French, French marsouin marsouin n., and post-classical Latin marsuinus (c1100 in a British source), marsum (late 11th cent. in a British source, probably a transmission error for marsuin).
