Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian Baba Jaga.
Etymology: < Russian Baba Jaga < baba baba n.6 + jaga Baba Yaga (compare Old Russian jaza illness (1073)), cognate with Old Church Slavonic jęza illness, Serbian and Croatian jeza fear, terror, (regional) anger, Polish jędza shrew, witch; probably further cognate with Lithuanian engti to torment, oppress, tear, flay, beat, abuse, Old Icelandic ekki lamentation, grief, Old English inca doubt, question, scruple. Compare (with different order of elements) Russian regional Jaga Baba ( > English Yaga Baba (1804 or earlier), French Yaga-Baba (1810 or earlier)), Ukrainian Jazibaba, Czech Ježibaba.
In Russian and other Slavic folklore: (the name of) a witch or female demon.
