Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin monopodium ; mono- comb. form, -podium comb. form.
Etymology: In sense 1 < classical Latin monopodium a table with one leg < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + ποδ- , πούς foot (see -pod comb. form) + classical Latin -ium -y suffix4. In sense 2 < mono- comb. form + -podium comb. form, after German Monopodium (1873 in the passage translated in quot. 1875 at sense 2).
1. A table or stand with a single support; a support for a Regency table, sideboard, etc., comprising an animal's head (and body) above a single foot. Cf. monopod adj.
