Etymology: < ancient Greek μορμώ a hideous female monster (also as proper noun, and as an exclamation to frighten children), perhaps cognate with classical Latin formīdāre (see formidable adj.; compare probable correspondence between ancient Greek μύρμηξ ant (see myrmeco- comb. form) and classical Latin formīca formica n.¹ with dissimilation of consonants in the Latin word).
