Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Myxobacter.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Myxobacter (R. Thaxter 1892, in Bot. Gaz. 17 403) < myxo- myxo- comb. form + bacter- (in bacterium bacterium n.). Compare later myxobacterium n.
Microbiology.
Originally (in form Myxobacter): a genus of slime-producing bacteria having rod-like spores (now historical). Later: = myxobacterium n.Forms originally described under this genus name are now included in the genus Polyangium (or other genera of the family Polyangiaceae) of myxobacteria.
