Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin nebris; Greek νεβρίς.
Etymology: < classical Latin nebris a fawn-skin worn by Bacchus and his votaries, or its etymon ancient Greek νεβρίς < νεβρός fawn, of uncertain origin + -ις -id suffix2.Compare the earlier use of Nebrides as an epithet of Bacchus (apparently arising from a misunderstanding on Topsell's part as the only such form attested in either Latin or Greek is the plural of nebris):1607 E. Topsell Hist. Foure-footed Beastes 585 Bacchus was also called Nebrides, because he wore the skinne of a hinde-Calfe, which is spotted almost like a Panther.
Greek Mythology.
The skin of an animal (usually a fawn), esp. as worn by Dionysus and his votaries.
