Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French neurome.
Etymology: < French neurome (L. Odier Man. de méd. pratique (1803) xxii. 279) < ancient Greek νεῦρον nerve (see neuro- comb. form) + French -ome -oma comb. form.
Pathology.
Originally: any tumour on or of a nerve. Later: spec. a benign neoplasm of neuronal or nerve-sheath origin (now rare); (more fully traumatic neuroma, amputation neuroma) a non-neoplastic proliferation of nerve fibres and Schwann cells occurring after injury to a nerve.
