Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pentaglottos, pentaglottus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pentaglottos, noun (1546 in a work title) and adjective (a1549 as pentaglottus; 1612 in the title of Lexicon Pentaglotton , a work by V. Schindler: see quot. 1727 at sense A.) < penta- penta- comb. form + ancient Greek γλῶττα tongue (see gloss n.1; compare -glot comb. form). Compare earlier pentaglottical adj., and also earlier polyglot adj., polyglot n.
