Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin nigr-, niger.
Etymology: Apparently < classical Latin nigr-, niger black (see niger n.1). Compare French nègre (1970 or earlier).
Soap-making.
A dark-coloured solution of soap and impurities (colouring material, alkali, etc.) which settles out from the pure soap during the final stage of the manufacturing process.
