Etymology: < odd adj. + ball n.1, perhaps after screwball n.Apparently attested slightly earlier as a nickname: 1941 Kaufman (Texas) Herald 25 Dec. 7/4 Of those [nicknames] that were not complimentary, there was a very interesting collection. ‘Gruesome’,..‘Grapefruit’, ‘Odd Ball’, ‘Slug’, ‘Fatty’,..were outstanding.
