单词 ohlone
释义

Ohlonen.adj.

Brit. /əˈləʊni/, /əʊˈləʊneɪ/, U.S. /əˈloʊni/, /oʊˈloʊneɪ/
Inflections: Plural Ohlones, unchanged.
Forms: 1800s Alchone, 1800s Olchone, 1800s Olhone, 1800s Oljon, 1800s– Ohlone.
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish Oljones.
Etymology: < Spanish Oljones, plural (see note) < Ramaytush (San Francisco Costanoan) 'olxon tribelet on the west side of the San Francisco Peninsula. The form Ohlone apparently arose as a transmission error for Olhone (compare quot. 1861 at sense A.). All the forms in -e involve misinterpretation of the Spanish plural ending -es as -s . In early use, Spanish Oljones was synonymous with costeños (Indians) of the coast, rendered in English as Costanos (compare quot. 1861 at sense A.); the form Ohlone came into use as a linguistic family name in the 1960s as a synonym for Costanoan, which was formed < Costanos.
A. n.
A member of a North American Indian people formerly inhabiting the west side of the San Francisco Peninsula of California, one of several groups speaking Ramaytush (San Francisco Costanoan). Also (more generally and in later use): a member or descendant of any of the Costanoan-speaking peoples; the Costanoan language family or its extinct component languages collectively. The more general use dates from the 1960s.
