Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin olerāceus , holerāceus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin olerāceus, variant of holerāceus ( < holer- , holus pot-herb (probably cognate with gall n.1) + -āceus : see -aceous suffix) + -ous suffix. In sense 2, after scientific Latin Oleraceae, former name of a botanical division (Linnaeus Philos. Bot. (1751) 33 as Holeraceae). N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫlĕrēi·ʃəs) /ɒləˈreɪʃəs/.
