Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: ortho- comb. form, Greek στίχος , -y suffix3.
Etymology: < ortho- comb. form + ancient Greek στίχος row, line (see stich n.) + -y suffix3, after German Orthostiche (1873 in the passage translated in quot. 1875; 1868 in first edition of the same text). Compare parastichy n.
Botany.
A vertical series of leaves attached directly above one another on an axis or shoot. Cf. parastichy n.
