Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: pachy- comb. form, Greek καυλός.
Etymology: < pachy- comb. form + ancient Greek καυλός stem, stalk (see caul n.2), after Hellenistic Greek παχύκαυλος having a thick stem or stalk.

A tree having a thick primary stem and few or no branches (a primitive growth form especially characteristic of the tropics). Cf. leptocaul n. and adj.
