单词 pantine
释义

pantinen.

Brit. /ˈpantiːn/, /ˈpantʌɪn/, U.S. /ˈpænˌtaɪn/, /ˈpænˌtin/, /ˈpæn(t)ən/
Forms: 1700s panteen, 1700s pantein, 1700s– pantine, 1800s pantin.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French pantin, pantine.
Etymology: < French pantin (1747; also †pantine), further etymology uncertain (see below).French pantin is perhaps < pantine skein of silk (1570; irregularly < pan (see pane n.2) + -ine -ine suffix1). A derivation < Pantin , the name of a village near Paris, has been suggested, but is unlikely. The alternative etymology proposed in quot. 1748 is also unsupported.
Now rare.
