Etymology: < classical Latin partiārius sharing or participating, associate, joint, held jointly or in common, shared, in post-classical Latin also as noun, land-tenant at a share of the crop (early 9th cent.), co-participant (late 9th cent.) < parti- , alternative stem of part- , pars part n.1 + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare Middle French partiaire (adjective) sharing gains and losses with another, especially in land tenure (1514), (noun) tenant sharing his gains with his landlord (1559), Old Occitan parcier (13th cent. in an isolated attestation), Spanish parcero , now aparcero (937 as parcera ), Catalan parcer (1191), Portuguese parceiro (1082), Italian parziario (1609).
