Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pāstōrālia.
Etymology: < classical Latin pāstōrālia, neuter plural of pāstōrālis pastoral adj.The neuter plural and the neuter singular of the Latin adjective occur as noun in 15th-cent. versions of the title of St Gregory's Cura Pastoralis. Compare also post-classical Latin officia pastoralia pastoral responsibilities, plural of officium pastorale (see pastoral adj.).
The duties of a pastor. Later also: spiritual care or guidance as a subject of theological study.
