Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pentandria.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pentandria (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (1735)) < penta- penta- comb. form + -andria (see Monandria n.). Compare slightly earlier Monandria n., polyandria n., etc., and slightly later Pentagynia n.
Botany. Now historical.
In the Linnaean artificial system: the fifth class of plants, comprising those having hermaphrodite flowers with five stamens; (also) an order characterized by flowers with five stamens in any of certain other classes.
