Etymology: < Italian Piemontese (adjective) from or relating to Piedmont (1558; also used as noun in sense ‘inhabitant of Piedmont’) < Piemonte (see piedmont n. and adj.) + -ese -ese suffix; subsequently re-formed after the usual English form of the name (see piedmont n. and adj.). Compare Middle French, French piémontais (1558 as noun in the name of a dance), †piémontois (1535).
