Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πόλις , -ad suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πόλις city (see polis n.2) + -ad suffix1, after oread n., etc. (see quot. 1887). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pǫ·liăd) /ˈpɒlɪəd/.
Obsolete.
A nymph who inhabits a city.Apparently an isolated use.
