Etymology: < scientific Latin polysporus (1842 or earlier as specific epithet) and its etymon ancient Greek πολύσπορος fertile, in Hellenistic Greek also abounding in seed ( < πολυ- poly- comb. form + σπόρος spore n.) + -ous suffix. Compare scientific Latin Polyspora, genus name (1825 or earlier). N.E.D. (1907) also gives the pronunciation (pǫ̆li·spŏrəs /pəˈlɪspərəs/.
