Etymology: < ancient Greek πράσινος leek-green (see prasine n. and adj.) + -phyte comb. form, after French Prasinophycinées (M. Chadefaud 1950, in Comptes rendus de l'Acad. des Sci. 231 988) or scientific Latin Prasinophyceae, class name ( T. Christensen Botanik (1962) II. 128).Christensen's Latin name was originally published without full description, and validated by later authors.
