Etymology: < post-classical Latin progenitura begetting of offspring (beginning of the 14th cent.: see quot. c1429 at sense 1), primogeniture (1461 in a British source) < classical Latin prōgenit- , past participial stem of prōgignere to beget (see progenitor n.) + -ūra -ure suffix1: compare geniture n. Compare Middle French, French progéniture origin, extraction (1481), descendants (1610).
