Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ψάρ , -o- connective, -lite comb. form¹; Greek ψαρός , -lite comb. form¹.

Etymology: Either < ancient Greek ψάρ starling (of uncertain origin, perhaps ultimately related to stare n.¹) + -o- connective + -lite comb. form¹, or < ancient Greek ψαρός speckled ( < ψάρ starling) + -lite comb. form¹; apparently after German Starstein , Staarstein (1785 (as Stahrenstein ) or earlier; < Star starling (see stare n.¹) + Stein stone n.).

Palaeontology. Obsolete. rare.

The fossilized stem of a tree fern of the genus Psaronius, which occurred in the late Carboniferous and early Permian and was surrounded by a layer of aerial roots; = psaronite n.
