Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < quarter n. + -eer suffix1, with elision of the medial syllable. Perhaps compare French quartenier official in charge of a town quarter (second half of the 14th cent. in Middle French; now historical). With the form quartier compare -ier suffix.No corresponding French word occurs in the passage translated in quot. 1705.
