Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew, combined with an English element; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Hebrew rabbānī , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew rabbānī, adjective and noun ( < rabbānīm , plural of raḇ Rav n. + -i suffix2) + -ite suffix1, originally after French rabbanite (1704 (in the passage translated in quot. 1705) or earlier). Compare slightly later Rabbinite n. and earlier rabbinist n.
