Etymology: < Japanese rotenon, (also formerly) rotenōn (K. Nagai 1902, in Jrnl. Tokyo Chem. Soc. 23 753, Romanized as Rotenon , apparently following German spelling conventions) < a Chinese regional (Taiwan: Southern Min) word for derris and similar plants, literally ‘dew-vine’, Romanized by Nagai as Roh-ten ( < dew (Mandarin ) + tîn cane, rattan, vine (Mandarin téng ); compare Mandarin lùténg , denoting only Millettia taiwaniana) + Japanese -ōn or its etymon German -on -one suffix, after German Keton ketone n.A more common name of the derris in Chinese regional (Taiwan: Southern Min) is (in Nagai's Romanization) Hi-i-ten, literally ‘fish vine’ (compare Mandarin yúténg and its equivalent Japanese gyotō, in the same sense), so called on account of its use to poison fish.
A poisonous compound obtained from the roots of several species of plant (notably derris, cubé, and timbo) and widely employed as a pesticide and piscicide.Rotenone is a pentacyclic ketone. Formula: C23H22O6.
