Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French réclame.
Etymology: < French réclame publicity, in early use especially short piece of publicity in the press (1834), specific sense of réclame (see reclaim n.1). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (reklam) /reklam/.
In earlier use: a piece of publicity, esp. as manufactured by a publicity agent, promoter, etc.; an advertisement. In later use: public acclaim or notoriety; cachet, fame, prestige; an instance of this.
