Origin: A borrowing from Malay. Etymon: Malay satai.
Etymology: < Malay satai, saté, ultimately < Tamil catai, regional variant of tacai flesh. Compare Indonesian saté, Javanese saté, Balinese saté, and also Dutch saté (1914).
A dish of Indonesian and Malaysian origin, consisting of small pieces of seasoned meat, or (in later use) fish, vegetables, etc., grilled on a skewer and served with a sauce (usually a peanut sauce; cf. satay sauce n. at Compounds). Also with modifier denoting the main ingredient, as chicken satay, etc.Recorded earliest in attributive use.
