Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi semal

Etymology: < Hindi semal < Prakrit simbala < Sanskrit śimbala (compare earlier Prakrit saṁbali, and also Sanskrit śālmali), of unknown origin, probably a loanword.The forms cymbal and symbol (cited in quot. 1886) are apparently < Hindi simbal (now perceived as a variant of semal ), probably reflecting a variant of the same underlying word. In most cases, English forms with -ul reflect -al in Hindi; the form simool probably reflects Bengali śimul (with vowel harmony) < a suffixed form *śimalu (compare Assamese śimalu).

The (red) cotton tree of Asia, Bombax ceiba (family Malvaceae), which has red flowers and seed capsules that contain white, cotton-like fibres (a form of kapok).
