Origin: A borrowing from Irish. Etymon: Irish Seanbhean Bhocht.

Etymology: < Irish Seanbhean Bhocht (see note) < sean old (see sean nós n.) + bean woman (see quean n.) + bocht poor, unfortunate (see béal bocht n.).Phonology. The second and third elements show lenition of the initial consonants (see lenition n. 2) on account of their position in the construction, in both cases causing a change from b to bh (pronounced /v/). Possible origin. In English apparently originally with reference to The Shan Van Vocht (Irish An tSeanbhean Bhocht ), the title of a late 18th-cent. Irish revolutionary song (versions of which are quoted in quots. 1828 and 1842). It is likely that this was taken from earlier Irish-language oral tradition, as a similar character appears in recorded tales. As a personification of the waste land she was invoked to condemn the British administration of Ireland.
