Etymology: < shred v. + -er suffix1. Compare Old Frisian skrêdere clipper of coin, Middle Low German schrôder, schrâder (Low German schröder) pruner, etc., also tailor (whence Danish skrædder, Swedish skräddare), Middle High German schrôtære (modern German schröter) now chiefly in sense ‘stag-beetle’.
