1942 Jrnl. Optical Soc. Amer. 32 355/2 The names, phot and stilb were..coined by Blondel (1921) and are in general use on the Continent.

1953 J. W. T. Walsh Photometry (ed. 2) v. 136 On the c.g.s. system the unit [of luminance] is the stilb, equal to one candela per sq. cm. or the nit, equal to one candela per sq. metre. There is no name for the corresponding unit on the British system.

1963 van Wijk & Ubing in W. R. van Wijk Physics of Plant Environment iii. 90 In photometry a black body at the temperature of melting platinum (2042·16°K) is used as a standard light source. It has by definition a surface brightness of 60 candelas per cm² or 60 stilb, when viewed in a direction perpendicular to the surface.
