Etymology: < French -iatrie (in e.g. hippiatrie hippiatry n.) < Hellenistic Greek -ιατρεία , combining form (in e.g. λογοιατρεία ; rare) of ancient Greek ἰατρεία healing, medical treatment < ἰατρεύειν to heal ( < ἰατρός healer, physician: see iatro- comb. form) + -ία -ia suffix¹. Compare post-classical Latin -iatria (16th cent., in hippiatria and also chymiatria (see chemiatric adj. and n.), or earlier), German -iatrie.Earliest in the 17th cent. in the isolated early borrowing from French hippiatry n.; subsequently from the early 19th cent., frequently in adaptations of French and German words.
