Etymology: < French tamis /tami/ a sieve (of wire, silk, hair, etc.) (12th cent. in Littré) = Provençal tamis , Spanish tamiz , Italian tamigio , Venetian tamiso , medieval Latin tamisium (Du Cange), identical in origin with West German *tamisjo- , the source of Old English and Middle Low German tęmes sieve, Middle Dutch tęmse , Old High German zemisa : see temse n.
Obsolete.
