Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Acidanthera.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Acidanthera (C. F. Hochstetter 1844, in Flora 14 Jan. 25) < ancient Greek ἀκιδ- , ἀκίς pointed object ( < the same Indo-European base as edge n.) + post-classical Latin anthera anther n., in allusion to the cuspate anthers.

A plant of the genus or former genus Acidanthera (family Iridaceae), which comprises tropical and southern African herbaceous perennials having spikes of hooded fragrant flowers. Acidanthera is now usually regarded as a subsection of the closely related genus Gladiolus.
