1908 Med. Chron. 48 180 Tropholysis or the mechanism by which the nutritive substances are assimilated to the protoplasmic molecule is presumably analogous to that of haemolysis and bacteriolysis. We may thus conceive of a tropholytic receptor and a tropholytic complement.
2. Ecology. Of a layer or zone of standing water, esp. in a lake: characterized by the consumption or decomposition of organic nutrients and oxygen produced by photosynthesis. Cf. trophogenic adj. 2.
