Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: winter n.1, hedge n.
Etymology: Apparently < winter n.1 + hedge n., with reference to the practice of hanging out laundry on hedges to dry, air, and bleach in the summer months. Compare earlier winter dyke n.
English regional (chiefly northern).
An upright frame on which laundry is hung to dry or air; a clothes horse. Also (in later use): a laundry rack suspended from the ceiling. Cf. winter dyke n. 1.
