Chemistry.

Originally, each of four isomeric unsaturated hydrocarbons with chemical formula C₄H₆; (in later use spec.) either of the two isomers which are alkynes, used in chemical synthesis.The two alkynes are 1-butyne or but-1-yne (CH≡CCH₂CH₃) and 2-butyne or but-2-yne (CH₃C≡CCH₃C); both are gases at room temperature. The other two isomers are buta-1-3-diene (CH₂=CHCH=CH₂) and buta-1-2-diene (CH₂=C=CHCH₃). These are no longer referred to as butynes.
