Brit. /ˈbjuːtʌɪn/, U.S. /ˈbjuˌtaɪn/
Forms: 1800s– butine (now nonstandard), 1900s– butyne.

Etymology: < but- (in classical Latin būtyrum butter n.1) + -ine suffix5, perhaps after butine n. In later use showing alteration of the ending after -yne suffix.
Chemistry.
Originally, each of four isomeric unsaturated hydrocarbons with chemical formula C4H6; (in later use spec.) either of the two isomers which are alkynes, used in chemical synthesis. The two alkynes are 1-butyne or but-1-yne (CH≡CCH2CH3) and 2-butyne or but-2-yne (CH3C≡CCH3C); both are gases at room temperature. The other two isomers are buta-1-3-diene (CH2=CHCH=CH2) and buta-1-2-diene (CH2=C=CHCH3). These are no longer referred to as butynes.
