Etymology: < ad- prefix + fatuate adj., after infatuate adj. There is no corresponding Latin compound. Compare earlier affatuated adj. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ăfæ·tiuĕt) /əˈfætjuːət/.
