a peace treaty concluded at Lake Melno between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Poland on the one hand and the Teutonic Order on the other. After the battle of Grunwald of 1410, in which the order was defeated and forced to agree to unfavorable terms in the First Toruri Peace Treaty, the German feudal lords began to prepare for a new war against Lithuania and Poland, intending to annex Zemaitija and territory beyond the Neman River. In 1422 the order, supported by Emperor Sigismund and Pope Martin V, began the war but was defeated. By the Melno Treaty the Teutonic Order retained only the Klaipeda region and the Polish littoral and renounced its claims to Zemaitija and the territory beyond the Neman.
