Tosno


Tosno

 

a city (since 1963) under oblast jurisdiction and administrative center of Tosno Raion, Leningrad Oblast, RSFSR. Located on the Tosna River, a tributary of the Neva. Population, 22,000 (1974). Tosno is a railroad junction 54 km southeast of Leningrad. The Moscow-Leningrad highway passes through the city. A bus repair shop, the Stroidetal’ Plant, and a furniture factory are located in the city. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45, Tosno was captured by fascist German troops on Aug. 29, 1941. In January 1944 fierce fighting raged in the Tosno area, and the city was liberated on Jan. 26, 1944.
