García Quejido, Antonio

Born February 1856; died July 13, 1927, in Madrid. Figure in the Spanish workers’ movement. By trade a printing worker.

García Quejido was one of the organizers of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party. He was the chief organizer of the General Confederation of Labor (1888) and one of its leaders. In 1894 he was elected secretary of the National Committee of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party. With the object of propagating Marxism in Spain he founded the magazine La Nueva Era and the Library of Social Sciences Publishing House. With the victory of the October Revolution in Russia, García Quejido became a propagandist of its ideas. He was one of the leaders of a group of left socialist internationalists that in April 1921 withdrew from the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party and founded the Spanish Communist Workers’ Party; this party in November 1921 merged with the Communist Party of Spain (founded in 1920). In 1921 he became a member of the Communist Party Central Committee.
