- a southern US state on the Atlantic Ocean, also called the Tarheel State and the Old North State. The largest city is Charlotte, and the capital city is Raleigh. The state was settled by the English and named after King Charles I. It was one of the original 13 states and later one of the Confederate States. Its products include tobacco, corn, furniture, paper and chemicals. Its tourist attractions include the Great Smoky Mountains, the Blue Ridge National Parkway and the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kitty Hawk.
