‖ Adonai|əˈdəʊnaɪ, ædəʊˈneɪaɪ| Also Adonay. [Heb. ădōnāi my Lords (f. ādōn lord), one of the names given in O. T. to the Deity, and represented in the A.V. by ‘Lord’ in ordinary type; also substituted by the Jews, in reading, for the ‘ineffable name’ jhvh = Jahveh or Jehovah, the latter of which is said to owe its vowels to being ‘pointed’ by the Masoretes with those of the word ădōnāi.] A name of the Supreme Being.
